| Behind The Scenes Look at Trouser9's Spring/Summer 2017 Collection |
Being a designer and not having an educational background in fashion design, sometimes we just get lost in the cracks. PSA: Don't think in order to be a really successful designer, your educational background has to be in fashion, there are so many successful designers who didn't attend fashion school (Tory Burch, Vera Wang, Stacey Bendet, and Ralph Lauren). I definitely consider myself an expert in the industry, but when things get a little wacky its not fun.
I took a few accelerated courses to help me understand the basics of design and the multiple seasons spent with the CFDA volunteering during Fashion Week, really help me understand the big picture of having a line. Everything I know about designing is pretty much self-taught and of course trail and error. I've been studying the fashion industry since I was 16, I'm very good at developing a collection (sketching, trend forecasting, development, communicating with manufactures and problem solving). But the whole idea of understanding textiles....please help me!!!!
I'm not oblivious to recognizing good fabrics when I see them or identifying the good with the bad, that's not my issue. My issue is going into a fabric store and just being flat out overwhelmed by not knowing how identify the various types fabrics....like knowing the difference between cotton, rayon and polyester for instance. I pacified this issue by sourcing fabrics via online. I know, I know, I know....bad idea right? Well, at the moment its working for me. I order a lot from Mood Fabrics, I like to order as many swatches as I can just to familiarize my self with various fabrics.
I have some many amazing ideas for my future in designing, but I want to make sure I choose the perfect fabrics for each design and silhouette. As a consumer, turned designer some brands lost a understanding of how important the fit is with clothing. That's is my mission to establish for Trouser9, in the contemporary market the clothing is so stunning and beautifully developed but the fit can be an issue at times. With Trouser9, the fit is just as important as the design.
What is your special way in sourcing your fabrics? I would love to hear. Are you satisfied with the fit of the current contemporary clothing market? Could it be better?
